“I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.”
My love story with the world began with a lot of fear and a whisper from my gut.
You can ask me about it when we meet for drinks but to cut the long story I will make this short.
When I was 16 my parents forced me on a trip to China that I begged to be spared from. I did everything to avoid this daunting adventure and I came very close to getting my way. Thankfully, my gut has always whispered loud enough and I have always decided to listen. This time it whispered, you’ll regret missing this. So I went.
There I met Rebecca:
An instant connection. She is my safe place. Together we have traveled the world for the past 7 years. 5 continents, 23 countries, 37 cities; road trips, mishaps, close calls, and hilarity.
Travel Changes You.
I hate to sound like a rich bitch who studied abroad in Europe for a month and thinks she’s a hippie now, but I’ve earned my stripes.
Some trips are different than others. I’ve done the tour bus. I’ve also slept in hostels where my pillow was stuffed with cotton balls. Rebecca and I will still bet you today we were the only people sleeping there. I’ve slept in Hostels where I’ve had to lock the door because for my safety. I’ve also eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world. I’ve made friends with locals who invited me to their apartment to learn German and eat hummus.
I’ve lived travel. I’ve lived vacations. The two are very different. Although, I like the hybrid.
Travel has made me a kinder, stronger person. It gave me a best friend whom I could never find the same safety, shelter, and comfort in someone else as I do her. It’s given me bonds to places and people scattered around the planet. It’s given me love, it’s given me romance, it’s given me hours of laughter.
Travel taught me how to handle shit. It taught me how to think on the spot, how to watch the world, how to connect with people, and how to be present.
In Israel we partied till the sun came up. We stumbled out of a cab to brunch at 4am where we ate breakfast with a bucket of champagne.
In Croatia I taught Rebecca how to drive stick shift. In Dubrovnik, I almost broke my tail bone cliff diving with Australian Gymnasts.
In Bosnia we met a family who celebrated Mother’s Day by picking figs off of a tree by the river.
People are and will always be wonderful. This is what travel has taught me. This is why travel makes me, me, as your wedding photographer.
Watching the World:
Before I became a photographer, I thought about becoming a movie location scout. My mind sees scenes for sketches and movies all the time when I walk into a place. Photography refined that skill: making it more robust and technical.
I will always draw to nature and botany. That’s obvious in my work. I love panoramas and landscapes and the earth. But I also need my god-damn AC and BlueTooth Speaker.
I don’t travel for me anymore, I travel for my business. To keep my brain and creativity sharp and to watch how the world does it too.
Something happened. When I was studying abroad in Argentina, I trekked the Chilean side of Patagonia. The W Trek down in Torres Del Paine to be exact. While climbing Mirador Del Torres, we got Summit Fever. We missed our turn around time and it cut us close to putting ourselves in serious and unprepared danger. That night, after finding refuge, I had my first full-on panic attack.
Ever since, I’ve struggled to enter national parks. I get PTSD and begin to hyperventilate and panic. I am scared of getting lost or people not finding me.
I don’t let it stop me. The following year, I visited Kings Canyon in the Outback of Australia. I noticed the panic resurfacing from the parking lot. The following year, I went to Plitvice State Park in Croatia. As the sun lowered my panic heightened.
It’s difficult for me, but not impossible. If you choose a natural location, I will request a knowledgable guide to keep eye on time and surroundings so I can work.
I don’t discriminate, I’ll go pretty much anywhere you ask me to. If your wedding happens to fall in one of my wish list destinations, I will give you a discount on one of my collections. Let’s get packing!
